I haveI have no excuse for being absent. Wait a minute yes I do! We are expanding our wee family of three to a family of four! Since January I have been so nauseas and saying I have been extrememly exhausted would be a wild understatement! It's not that I have been too busy to blog, though I have been busy, I have simply been, for lack of greater words, too exhausted. I am just about to enter the beautiful 2nd trimester and so hopefully the energy picks up and the nausea backs off a bit and maybe I can back into the swing of things.

Since we found out we were expecting (after peeing on 11 tests just to make sure and out of shock) I have begun transforming our guest bedroom into a big boy room for our little man. My original goal was to spend as little money as possible which didn't really happen. I am slightly dissapointed in myslef in that regards but I still made sure to purchase only used items or items that were greatly on sale.

The room began with a horrible shade of lavander. I love lavander as a plant, not as a wall colour. The window coverings were not terrible, suede roman blinds, so I will be reusing them in our basement. In the middle of the room we had a queen bed, the one that has one of my diy headboard projects which can be found in my previous blog site.

I started by painting the entire room in a shade called moonlit moment. It was one of those pretinted cans you get at Walmart. I happened to like the colour and it saved me from have to compare multiple shades of grey (at least 50 of them). As I was painting the first wall, the colour seemed to have an odd tint to and suddenly I panicked because I thought about the name and then thought I bought glow in the dark paint and that the entire rom would glow! But it wasn't and it doesnt thank goodness. I added some details to the doors with a darker shade which I got for 50% off because they mistinted it and painted all the trim white.

I'm not going to go into every detail about everything that I bought and did to get to the final reveal of my work but I will highlight some key features that I really like:

1. The Kura bed

We wanted to buy Hans a good bed. Not a toddler bed though because personally I think those are a big waste of your money. It's just another bed and matress that he'll outgrow. We looked at a couple beds in Ikea and decided to go with the Kura. It's a great bed that you can flip upside down to make either playspace underneath or it can become a bunk bed. Instead of buying at Ikea though we went to Kijiji and found somone local selling theirs with the canopy! we paid half the price of a new one and it was in great/ like-new condition. I aslo purchased a nice quilt set at 70% off at Sears. We did however splurge on a new matress for him.

2. The curtain holdbacks

I love this little feature. The holdbacks are two small blue airplanes that have glow in the dark stripes. I know I was worried earlier about having glow in the dark walls but this is just a mini detail. The best part is that my husband found these brand new still in the package at Value Village for a mere $3.99.

3. The toy shelf

I originally wanted the expedit cubby shelf from Ikea. I'm sure you know which one it is. It's pretty popular. But I'm not paying $70 or $80 for it new and not $40 for it used. Fortunately I didn't find one or I would never have found this beauty at Bibles for Missions They had 2 of them and part of me is kicking myself for not getting both. My mother was with me when I found it told me I could always replace the legs because they were so 60's. Well I'm happy to say I'm keeping the legs in place because I love them! The size of the shelf is perfect for the space too!

Here's a couple more pictures to show the rest of the room.

The doors were really bland so both doors and walls got a little extra detail.

As you walk in.

So far Hans is loving his new accomodations. He's not sleeping here at night time just yet though, but he is taking his afternoon nap in his new big boy bed. He also frequently comes in here just to play. I would say the transition is happening pretty good so far.

Want to know how we announced the need for a new room?

Editing in a good story:

I'm up on a ladder, about 4 rungs up. I've got a power drill in my hand and I just finished installing a curtain rod. I'm about to climb down and look behind me to see where my step is, but instead I see Hans, my one and a half year old son right up on the rung beneath me. It took quite a bit of maneuvering to get us both off the ladder!
